In a message in this thread at GenSuck Crystal stated "I saw much of the work many of us have done turn into pay per view sites. "
In another message in this thread Crystal provided the reason in her personal case with her statement - "Most of my worjk donated to various groups does not have my name on them, at my request. "
She gave all copyright and rights to the group she chose to submit her transcriptions to. Those groups are/were free to do what they choose/chose with her past work. She, herself, is ultimately responsible that her work did not remain where she intended it to.
Ive seen many people complain that volunteer work was in pay-per-view sites. None of the examples Ive seen have stood up as stolen or misused. They had been given or sold to the pay-per-view site OR they are still in the FREE area of an online genealogy company. If there had been/is copyright infringement or an ownership question, they could/can be retrieved.
Neither she nor any of the other wonderful volunteers imagined what the genealogy community could evolve into. In the present and in the future, she and others can obtain and retain copyright and ownership of their work and therefore, control where it is available now and in the future.
There is a mail list devoted to copyright:

There are many more sources of copyright information that can be researched.
Thank you to Crystal and to the thousands of other wonderful volunteers who have transcribed and donated data over the years.
