So, the deal is that we subscribe for $39.95 for the initial release of the records from 1851-1859 and then: "Additional years will be added to the database in the coming months."
Well, I guess I will wait to subscribe and see how many years of records will be released in those "coming months". Anybody remember the promises about the WW 1 Draft Registration Cards? They were not a subscription database but after the initial release of two partial states, no more work was added for another whole year. Since this is subscription project, I would hope Ancestry will complete it in a timely manner

Maybe this explains why they are an award-winning business? Suckers keep falling for it, over and over again.
Once you bought a yearly subscription to see everything they had. Now it's broken down into little pieces and you pay for each piece.
AND Gary says they've only had 2 price hikes in 5 years! Probably true, but now the basic subscription gives you nothing.

Ancestry started putting the census online in late 2000. It's more like 3 years, not 5.

Let's put this into perspective:
Any company can offer a product for sale, at whatever price they choose to attach to it.
We need to focus on Ancestry's failure to provide what was paid for - at any price, at any given time.
Looks to be like it is more of a Bait & Switch issue or Advertising services they cannot provide.

They announce their subscription offer to Census films, which will be Indexed and ready for use...3 (or 5) years ago.
People subscribe, only to learn it is 'partial', and some critical States are not ready. We wait, allowing them time to get their act together..and wait, and wait.
They did NOT take States in alphabetical order or order of admittance to Statehood, or some logical criteria for releasing a finished product (and finishing a State from 1790-1930). They must have flipped a coin to see what would be online, THEN they indexed the films and re-released them under a NEW, IMPROVED blurb.
In March 2000 I called Ancestry to enquire about their Census-project schedule. I was told that they would ALL be done by May 2000. This was supported by their consistent advertising, emails, call-center offers, etc.
Then, they grow rapidly, spreading their tenacles, buying up competition, and trying to become the ONLY game in town. They can't finish Project 1 before shot-gunning resources into Project 2...or 200.
In the meantime, they get kudos and awards from groups that are either in bed with them, or clueless about Ancestry.com and Genealogy
Slap me if I'm wrong, but to repeatedly offer an item that is NOT as represented, change prices/packages and fail to follow through with published schedules, is ILLEGAL. Doesn't matter if it is Genealogy or some other service. Most groups practicing deceptive advertising or who fail to live up to their responsibilities end up in Court.
This issue goes beyond borders of the State of UT but it is common for the State to have jurisdiction in prosecution. Where is the UT Attorney General or Consumer Protection Agency in this picture?
