Some credit cards have a feature on their online sites where you can generate a "virtual" credit card number. It's a totally different card number but is tied to your real account. The programs vary some: the number might be a one-time only use, or only good for a short period of time such as one month, or for only a certain $ amount that you specify.

That way, if you give them that "virtual" card number, they can't pull this stunt later on because the card number...

I just got my credit card bill and they didn't cancel it after all. I had to dispute the charge. My wife called ancestry again and they told her that she renewed it instead of canceling...she clearly cancelled it the 1st time, so giving them the benefit of the doubt, they apparently intrepreted the word "cancel" to be "renew".

The credit card company told us not to pay the charge.

guest, if your so paranoid about this magazine subscription, why didn't you just tell them to cancel the whole thing and stop sending magazines? By allowing them to send you two more issues you've just prolonged your agony.

I called and got through quick enough. They "claimed" that the email didn't mean the subscription was renewed (even though it said it was)....so I suspect that automatic renewal of magazine subscriptions illegal and this was some marketing ploy to get you to call so they could peddle something.

End result was they are giving me 2 more issues and then I have to suffer through this again.

It is also sad that a company and those in bed with it have discarded any ethics in the process, including particularly those that are so worried about the survival of Rootsweb. Of course the auto-renewal and acquirement of Rootsweb was before Tom. I think he certainly fine tuned the tactics with the satellites, very large number of links to Ancestry, increase in number of subscriptions available and the movement away from outside ads for some financing to in-house ads and subscriptions...

I realized how you took that, and I understand how one can be sensitive to that, so I had no intention of flaming for it. The problems with Sonic Innovation happened right after Tom left, if I remember the articles I researched a few years ago about it, the problem was hidden from the investors who purchased the business. Tom sold it quickly, and left problems behind, which were created during his tenure.
I do agree he was hired to make ancestry and MFI grow rapidly. I also think he was...

Hi Ralf,
I had forgotten about his hearing aid company that I had read about in his bio so the inference went over my head. I interpeted it to mean something entirely different. I did not interpret it as related to my hearing and ear problems though because there is no way you could know but recent severe problems have made me a little sensitive in that area so I got a little hot under the collar. Now that you have reminded me of his hearing aid company, I realize I was wrong and apologize...

Check out Tom's history with the hearing aid company he founded. Also look at the dates of the news releases i posted above.
I don't know who you are, or the status of your hearing health, so the reference was not made to you personally, but to Tom's hearing aid company having multi-million dollar lawsuits filed against it shortly after he sold it.
Lawsuits tend to follow his departures.
This thread was about auto-renewal of subscriptions and the legality of it. I was noting that...

I already have hearing aids. I have been diagnosed wuth Trigeminal Neuralgia caused by surgery for a tumor that the Drs. couldn't find. As a result my hearing is very poor because I can't wear my hearing aids and my left ear is extremely painful at times, Thank you very much. I asked a simple question in response to your post and don't appreciate a smart ass answer.
I saw nothing in what I read of the Ticketmast/Time credit card abuse case that included names. I don't know if Tom left...

I know that Ancestry has an automatic renewal policy and quite frankly that scares me off. I did however buy FTM from them and with it came a discount subscription to a magazine. Now, a year later, I just got a "Thank You" from them for renewing the subscription. Guess what...I never renewed. Is this legal?
